These are not "canon" characters, to be precise; if you wish to take on any of these characters, you are entitled to change any minor details you chose, such as name or age. You may also select your own portrayer, if you so choose. Think of these characters as guidelines, in case you wish to create a character, but are not sure how to go about it.
The Mayfield Family: Resides at Linwood Manor
The Mayfields are a moderately wealthy family, with genteel manners and excellent prospects, despite the fact that the elder Mr. Mayfield is deceased. William, the eldest son, has inherited the state and manages it, but as he is unmarried, he allows his mother, sisters, and an orphaned cousin to remain in the house with him.

He is raising a young son, an orphaned ward, and a younger sister, and also employs a young governess, Charlotte Millhouse. He is very wealthy and considered to be an extremely eligible bachelor.

The Weatherley Family: Resides at Heatherton House
The Weatherly family is decidedly middle-class--not wealthy, but not desperately poor, either. Charles Weatherly, in particular, has excellent prospects, as a successful lawyer. Christopher is a clergyman. Isabel stays with Christopher, while Charles spends much of his time in town.
